A little about Sutton Coldfield…
Sutton Coldfield – often shortened to just Sutton – is located around 8 miles north of Birmingham and thanks to its historical connections to the British royal family, bears the title of Royal Town. In 1974, the metropolitan borough of the West Midlands was formed, and Sutton Coldfield became part of Birmingham rather than Warwickshire, despite a significant amount of protestation from local residents.
Back in the 17th and 18th Centuries, Sutton Coldfield enjoyed much prosperity It was popular with wealthy industrialists who wished to build homes and live a distance from the smog and pollution of Birmingham itself. Luxuries, such as seafood, could be experienced and products in general commanded 10% higher prices than in nearby towns.
There are still a number of large houses and manors in the Sutton Coldfield area, many of which have been converted into hotels – New Hall, Moor Hall, Moxhall Hall and Peddimore Hall to name but a few. Sutton Coldfield boasts Sutton Park – spanning 2.224 acres, it’s the largest urban park outside of London and one of the largest in Europe. Sutton Park is also a national nature reserve and also a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
